4. STATUE OF MORAYMA
STORY
Morayma was the daughter of the famous general Aliatar. She married Boabdil, who was the last king of Granada. On their wedding day, she had to get married wearing borrowed clothes and jewels, since her father had invested all his wealth in the war against the Christians. A few days after the wedding, Muley Hacén jailed his son Boabdil. Morayma was also imprisoned in a ‘carmen’ in Granada, together with her son Ahmed, from whom she had to separate later. Her story is forever linked with tears, since she had to overcome, apart from her separation from her son Ahmed, her husband’s incarceration during the battle of Lucena, and also her father’s death, which occurred during the same battle.
The family’s farewell from Loja and Granada after their surrender to the Christians ended up with her reunion with her son Ahmed. Once the family were reunited, they fled to the Alpujarras, and it was in Láujar de Andarax that Morayma eventually died after having achieved peace in her life. It is said that Boabdil never remarried, since he always remained in love with her and could never forget her.
